The names of the Nayanars were first compiled by Sundarar. They, along with the Alvars, influenced the Bhakti movement in Tamil. The Nayanars " dogs of Siva", ( NAYA means DOG in Tamil and Malayalam) were a group of 63 saints (also saint poets) in the 6th to 8th century who were devoted to the Hindu god Shiva in Tamil Nadu. The tamil alvars, ‘those immersed in god’ were Tamil poet-saints of South India who espoused bhakti (devotion) to the Hindu Supreme god Vishnu or his avatar Krishna in their songs of longing, ecstasy and service e twelve Vaishnava Alvars, they are regarded the important BHAKTI movement saints from Tamil Nadu. As part of the legacy of the Alvars, five Vaishnava philosophical traditions (sampradayas) have developed at the later stages. QUOTE : The Bhakti literature that sprang from Alvars has contributed to the establishment and sustenance of a culture that broke away from the ritual-oriented Vedic religion and rooted itself in devotion as the only path for salvation In addition they helped to make the Tamil religious life independent of a knowledge of Sanskrit. These fourteen verses are together called "Chaturdasa-manjarika-Stotra" (A hymn which is a bunch of fourteen verse-blossoms).
The fourteen disciples who were with the Master, then, are believed to have added one verse each.
Besides the refrain of the song beginning with the words "Bhaja Govindam", Shankara is stated to have sung twelve verses hence the hymn bears the title "Dvadasamanjarika-Stotra" (A hymn which is a bunch of twelve verse-blossoms). The Hymn to Govinda was composed on this occasion. He heard the sound of grammatical rules being recited by an old scholar.
Bhaja Govindham has always been my favourite musical piece in Sanskrit.Īcharya Shankara has beautifully scripted 32 verses way back when, to succinctly explain and portray the reasons for humane sufferings, how to live and lead a happy life, that would envy the bestselling self-help books of today.Īcharya Shankara, it is said, was walking along a street in Varanasi, one day, accompanied by his disciples.
